Pandora Reefs

A Treasure Trove of opportunity hidden in a maze of Reefs on the Far Northern Great Barrier Reef

  • Only 3 trips per year access this incredible remote area
  • Spectacular GT fishing, big dogtooth tuna and wrasse
  • Cast the shallow reef flats with light or heavy spin gear for a great variety of species
  • Troll the reef edges for big spanish mackerel, yellowfin, wahoo and marlin
  • Narrow channels funnel strong currents and create large upwellings
  • Light & heavy jigging for coral trout, wrasse, emperor and a variety of other species
  • Pandora Reefs are visited on 1 Ultimate Adventure and 2 Travel Trips annually

This area is visited for only 3 trips per year. It is extremely remote and difficult to access and as such is only visited on 1 Ultimate Adventure Trip each year. We also fish through this area on 1 travel trip going from Bligh Reef and finishing at Horn Island, and then again on the last trip of the year when we travel south from Ashmore Reef through this area and finish at Bligh Reef.  The video below shows some of the light tackle action filmed at Pandora Reefs with the AFN TV show.

Pandora Reef Species Guide

Start the day with an early morning troll in one of the reef passages, where massive Dogtooth and Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo and Sailfish are all very likely, then spend the morning on the shallow reef flats catching huge numbers of Coral Trout, Red Bass, Emperors and all sorts of other reef species, and follow that up with an afternoon GT session to get your arms stretched, or just take a leisurely troll on the inside of the reef for some of the big Spanish Mackerel that live in this area. If you want to catch lots of GTs, mixed with amazing reef flats action, pelagics on the outisde of the reef and some light tackle trolling or jigging, then Pandora Reef is not to be missed. The reef channels and coral structures in this area are as good as anywhere on the Great Barrier Reef, and the limited visits each year keep the fishing at a level so good it is hard to believe.

When do we fish Pandora Reefs?

This is an amazing area to visit in Spring and we visit this area during October/November. Please check the Rates and Dates page for more information, or fill in your details on the rates and dates form below for an instant email reply with all details.

Getting to Pandora Reefs

Located in the remote northern Coral Sea, on the outer Edge of the Great Barrier Reef, this reef is on of the more difficult to visit, but is well worth the effort. On the Ultimate Adventure trip that visits this reef annually, it is accessed via a flight from Cairns, followed by a short 4WD trip through the bush to meet Odyssey, and then an overnight steam of over 100nm to the Far Northern Great Barrier Reef. Once at Pandora, you will spend the week fishing before returning to Portland Roads for a return journey to Cairns. The Travel trips that fish through this area each year start and finish in various locations, so please email us or contact us for full details.
