Jewell Reef Trip Report

Check out a recent detailed Jewell Reef Trip Report.

Jewell Reef is all about Variety, but it also happens to have some of the best GT fishing in the world. It often happens at Jewell Reef that we have days releasing over 50GTs in a single day at Jewell Reef, with the fish usually between 25-40kgs. Truly spectacular fishing, and if you think that is good, check out the light tackle action in the shallows, the mackerel trolling or the deep jigging and the giant black marlin fishing. A simply spectacular location.

Jewell Reef Species Guide

The bar chart shows how Jewell Reef compares to our other locations in terms of the main sportfish that we target. Jewell and Bligh Reefs have the best variety of species and fishing styles of any location we visit. Jewell has giant black marlin fishing, sensational GT fishing, jigging, flyfishing and general sportfishing on offer. Pretty much every Coral Sea pelagic and reef species is available at this location. Jewell Reef trips are conducted from our 80ft Mothership and 36ft sportfisher, as well as our range of 18-25ft centre consoles. We cater for a maximum of 12 anglers fishing between 3 vessels at any one time, and these trips are run as part of our Whole Boat & Corporate Packages where Trip options can be customised to compliment your requirements for the Ultimate Adventure!

If you want to catch a giant black marlin, then this is simply the best place in the world to do it. Over 70% of all 1000+lb black marlin ever weighed anywhere in the world have been caught in the waters around Lizard Island and Jewell Reef. The fishing for GTs spanish mackerel, coral trout, dogtooth tuna and red bass is superb in these areas. Big GTs, up to 50kgs, and lots of them can be expected while popper fishing, and spanish mackerel around 25kgs are a common catch. Deep jigging the outer edge of the northern barrier reef also produces great action on reef fish and dogtooth tuna at times.

Of course the other phenomenon at Jewell Reef, that you’ll find nowhere else in the world are the GT mobile bommies

These are massive schools of GTs that gather to spawn at this time of year, and can be seen on the surface as a huge brown shape, which is why we call them a bommie. These schools of GTs consist of thousands of GTs between 25-40kg, and as soon as a lure lands on top of the brown patch, it is action time. Quadruple hook-ups on GTs are a common thing here.
