Frederick Trip Report

Check out a recent detailed Frederick Reef Trip Report.

Frederick Reef is the home of a spawning aggregation of wahoo

It has a spectacular anchorage with protected sand cay, and allows access to a remote coral seamount rising from thousands of metres up to 40m from the surface.

It’s hard to describe the wahoo action at these reefs because it is simply so prolific that you’ll think we’re making it up. It is just one of those things you need to see to believe.

Frederick Reef Species Guide

The bar chart shows how Frederick Reef compares to our other locations in terms of the main sportfish that we target. We have visited this reef a number of times over the years, and the fishing has been superb every year.

At the seamount in previous years, we have released over 100 wahoo and 25 yellowfin in a single day from one boat! In 2008 we had 60 wahoo hooked on fly in one day, and caught 18 on fly in a day, with the smallest at 55lbs. The 2009 and 2010 seasons have provided similar action, and have shown that this reef is a consistent performer each year when we visit. The wahoo average around 30kgs, and this has been consistent over the years.

If you want Blue Marlin, big sailfish, LOTS of massive wahoo and yellowfin tuna, mixed in with some GT popper fishing, jigging for amberjack and coral trout, then this is the place for you. The range of species available at Frederick Reef is quite impressive. We’ve also had some amazing popper fishing for yellowfin tuna in 2009 and 2010, with 40kg yellowfin a common catch on poppers.
