Escape & the surrounding reefs have provided consistently fantastic fishing for us over the past 10 years. The diversity of species has always been amazing, and the GT fishing and general lurecasting is always excellent, as is the light jigging and soft plastic fishing on the reefs. Until recently, we had only occasionally fished this area on our way to other northern areas. The fact is that our Odyssey Skipper, Andy, commented that “every time we fish this area the guests love it and we catch heaps, so why not do some shorter trips here with quick and easy access for guests – because the fishing rocks!”.

We’ve taken Andy’s advice for 2015 and beyond and have made these trips part of our annual schedule, and they have proven incredibly popular for 2015 already. The range of fishing options, and the quick easy access means you’ll have a great time fishing and won’t have to be away from work/family commitments for an extended period.

Escape Reef Species Guide

Escape Reef trips offer a diverse range of species and some high quality fishing for some of the most iconic bluewater Reef species on the Great Barrier Reef

This reef area is a sportfishing paradise, with spectacular year round action. This reef system has an appeal that keeps anglers coming back year after year, and with the fishing getting better every year why wouldn’t they!

When do we fish the Escape Reef Area?

The Escape Reef area fishes very well all year round, but the lightest winds often occur between January-April. However due to the nature of the reef the area offers great fishing and excellent anchorage all year round. The prime marlin season for Giant Black Marlin is Sept-Dec. Please check the Rates and Dates page for more information on Escape Reef for 2015

Getting to the Escape Reef Area

Escape Reef can be visited as part of our 3 & 4 Day Lagoon Explorer Trips. To visit Escape Reef you will need to be at the Cairns Buslines depot around 9:30am on the first day of your trip, and will then be taken on a 1 hr transfer to Port Douglas Marina, where you will board a comfortable transfer vessel for a 2 hr trip out to the Reef to meet up with our 80ft mothership and 2 x 18ft and 2 x 25ft Sportfishing vessels, which will be anchored in a beautiful reef anchorage. You will have a quick lunch and briefing on Odyssey and then enjoy an afternoon of sportfishing on the outer Great Barrier Reef.

At the end of your trip, you’ll fish on the last day until around 11am and then arrive back in Cairns at around 4-5pm in the afternoon.

You can choose to either fly into and out of Cairns on the same day as you arrive/depart Odyssey, or you can stay overnight in Cairns. We arrange all transfers ex Cairns as part of your trip, and can help with great rates on overnight accommodation while in Cairns.
